Handbuilding – A method of creating ceramic forms without a pottery wheel, using hands and basic tools.

Hard edge painting – A style of painting with sharp, clean transitions between areas of colour.

Hatching – A drawing technique using closely spaced parallel lines to create shading and texture.

Hieroglyphics – An ancient Egyptian writing system that also serves as a form of visual art.

Highlight – The lightest area in a drawing or painting, used to show where light hits an object.

Hot wax (encaustic painting) – A painting technique using melted wax to bind pigments.

Hudson River School – A 19th-century American landscape painting movement focused on nature and the sublime.
