Glossary-L

We’re loving the letter ‘L’ because of:

Lacquer – A glossy, protective coating used in decorative art and furniture.

Land art – A contemporary movement where artists create artworks directly in the natural landscape. This includes ‘en plein air’ painting.

Layering – The technique of applying multiple layers of media (paint, collage, etc.) to build texture, depth, or complexity.

Light – More than just a physical element, it plays a critical role in mood, contrast, and storytelling in visual art.

Line – One of the elements of art; the basis for drawing, composition, and form.

Linear perspective – A technique used to create the illusion of depth and space on a flat surface.

Line weight – The thickness or thinness of a line, used to convey movement, emphasis, or spatial depth.

Lithography – A printmaking technique based on the repulsion of oil and water, still used in both fine art and commercial printing.

Luminism – A 19th-century American painting style focused on light and tranquility, especially in landscapes.
