Glossary-Y

An art term glossary for the letter Y may seem tricky at first—since there are fewer common art terms starting with ‘Y’.

Some ‘Y’ terms come from non-Western art traditions, offering a way to diversify art education, like:

Yarn painting – A traditional art form of the Huichol people of Mexico, using yarn pressed into wax-covered surfaces.

Yakusha-e – A genre of Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) depicting kabuki actors.

Yellow – As one of the primary colours, yellow is essential to painting, design, and color theory. It plays a key role in creating mood, contrast, and harmony. It’s used in warm/cool colour analysis, complementary schemes, and psychological colour studies.
